Soils

Forest soils and soil  moisture are very important to tree size and development.  The better soils with the highest moisture are usually found on north and east facing slopes and in coves.  Areas close to creeks,  streams and rivers  usually have the best soils as well.  Your best timber will most likely be found in the area mentioned above.  Trees that are found on the south and west slopes and on ridge tops generally do not develop into high value timber.  Steep rocky western and southern facing slopes support cedar, elm and other low value trees.  To find out what your soils are for your property go to the following web site.   Web Soil Survey  This site will develop a great looking map and supply you with the type of soil you have on your property.

This site is dedicated to TREES. It deals with both the urban tree environment and the forest environment in the Upper Cumberland of Tennessee.
